State Spotlight! North Dakotans Vote for Clean Air!

by Mark F. on Thursday, November 29, 2012

On Election Day, the voters of North Dakota ensured they will have healthier air to breathe by passing Measure 4, which requires all workplaces, bars and restaurants to be smoke-free. The measure passed 67% to 33% and won the majority of votes of every county in the state.  This was the result of years of hard work throughout the state’s large and small rural communities.

What went into this victory?  First was the critical grassroots support at a local level from the start of the campaign. Advocates collected 21,000 signatures to put the measure on the ballot, 7,500 more than required.  Second was the work of a strong bill sponsor in Janet Maxson, an avid advocate who was served as an important media spokesperson surrounding the measure.  And finally, strong voter turnout helped get Measure 4 over the finish line!

The law takes effect on December 6th.  Thirty states now have similar laws on the books.
