NJ Senate Unanimously Passes Bill Requiring CPR Training for Coaches

by Corinne O. on Monday, July 8, 2013

On June 24, 2013, the NJ Senate voted unanimously to pass the "Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act."  This legisation requires that coaches and parents of student athletes receive education and information about sudden cardiac arrest.  It also requires that all coaches receive certification in CPR.

While all students are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest, not just student athletes, this bill is a good starting point.  Requiring CPR certification for coaches increases the number of individuals who are trained.  In addition, we hope that the educational piece that will be created by this legislation can be extended to all students and their parents.

The American Heart Association will continue to advocate for the timely introduction and passage of a companion bill in the Assembly over the coming months.
