New School Year Means More Kids Learning CPR in Rhode Island

by Megan T. on Friday, September 13, 2013

Fall is upon us, the school year has started, and thanks to the efforts of our amazing You’re the Cure advocates the new “CPR in Schools Law” is being implemented.  All high school students in Rhode Island will now receive hands-on CPR training and an overview of automated external defibrillator (AED) use prior to graduation as part of the health education curriculum.

Let’s take a minute to thank our bill sponsors, the House and Senate Leadership and Governor Chafee for supporting this important initiative.  Click the following link to send a thank you note today: http://yourethecure.org/aha/advocacy/composeletters.aspx?AlertID=33629

What’s next?  There are several ways that this new requirement can be implemented at no cost and schools will be receiving a guidance document that outlines various options.  In addition, the American Heart Association will be launching a campaign to secure state funding to provide schools with new equipment/CPR manikins to further enhance the educational experience and training that students receive.  Stay tuned!

Thank you for your continued support and advocacy!  Policy victories like this would not be possible without the passion and dedication of You’re the Cure advocates like YOU!
