Little Heart Heros take action for healthy babies - will you?

by Megan T. on Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Last month the American Heart Association's Rhode Island team hosted its annual Little Heart Hero Day at Roger Williams Zoo for children with heart conditions and their families.  As part of the day’s activities, parents signed petitions and children colored pictures that will be delivered to Governor Chafee to urge his support for pulse oximetry (pulse ox) screening for newborns in Rhode Island to detect critical congenital heart defects.  The non-invasive pulse ox screening consists of sensors placed on a baby's hand and foot to check blood oxygen levels. If their levels are too low, additional tests may be conducted that aid in detecting critical or possibly life-threatening heart defects that might otherwise go undetected. New research suggests wider use of pulse ox screening would help identify more than 90 percent of heart defects.

Will you sign a petition today?  It's easy!  Just print the document below, write a quick personal note to Governor Chafee and mail the petition to our office at One State Street, Suite 200, Providence, RI 02908, Attn: Megan Tucker.
