An Emergency Can Happen Anywhere

by Cresha A. on Thursday, January 10, 2013

You may have seen our policy goals related to CPR, AEDs and First Aid. As a leader in the science research for CPR and AEDs, we know that minutes matter. The organization has long advocated for quality programs and training with medical professionals and within the community. Many of our neighbor states are working on adding CPR training to their graduation requirement.

A medical emergency can't be predicted and often times it is a community member or loved one who could act first and save a life. I have been part of many award programs recognizing students and community members who acted fast to save a life.

A year and a half ago, I had the opportunity to further my knowledge by becoming a trainer in First Aid, CPR and AED use. It has been rewarding to help others learn skills that could save a life. And yet, I never dreamed I would be front and center for a medical emergency.

In between the many meetings to discuss our policy priorities with legislators and state agencies, I grabbed a cup of coffee yesterday. Suddenly, the woman next to me had breathing problems and began choking. There were several people who also had training in the coffee shop. The value of community training couldn't have been more apparent.  By the time EMS arrived, the woman was doing much better.

I am so thankful for the coordination of efforts to help this woman.

As I left the shop, it reminds me again of the importance of training. We will continue discussions with legislators and agencies to expand training opportunities and requirements. I certainly hope in the near future to write about policy here in Ohio.

In the meantime, you can be trained today. Please visit www.americanheart.org/cpr or call 877-242-4277 (877-AHA-4CPR) to find the nearest class. Do you have a story? Share it with us using the "Share Your Story" page. Have you been trained in CPR, AEDs or First Aid? Let us know. And remember, you can save a life!
