Go Red - More Than Just a Day

by Cresha A. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013

This Friday will mark the 10th Anniversary of Go Red for Women and Wear Red Day.  The movement has made significant impacts in educating women on their risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.  In addition, women are taking steps to improve their health.

This year, I hope you'll join us in wearing red on Friday.  You can also learn about your personal risk by taking the My Life Check.  It is a quick tool to assess your personal heart health and ways to improve.

Of course, as women (and men) gather for Wear Red Day and other activities throughout the month, we know we can also leave a lasting legacy in our communities.  The efforts of the You're the Cure network help us improve the heart health of our mothers, daughters, sisters, and our sons, husbands, and fathers.

You can help us know by visiting our Action Center to see all of our current efforts and to action.  Here are a few highlights to take action:

-In a recent report, Ohio's Tobacco Prevention and Cessation efforts received an "F" grade.  Ohio can do a better job preventing youth from starting to use tobacco and helping current users quit.

-Pulse Oximetry screening is a simple, noninvasive test for newborns to detect congenital heart defects.  Ohio can save the lives of babies by screening all newborns.

-Ohio is one of two state's without state health education standards.  While content/topics is left to the local districts, Ohio should ensure we teach with quality.
