Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week

by Kimberly R. on Friday, February 8, 2013

Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week started February 7th and runs through February 14th.  Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect in the United States and is the leading cause of birth-defect related deaths. Many of our advocates have been affected by a CHD, which is why here at the American Heart Association, we are working hard along with all of you to pass Pulse Oximetry testing legislation in our states.

Pulse Oximetry is a simple, non-invasive screening test that helps identify newborns at risk for heart defects. This test is cost effective and does not put a drain on resources, including no increase on nursing staff. Some states have already passed legislation related to Pulse Oximetry, such as New Jersey, Indiana, Maryland, Tennessee and West Virginia.

To support the American Heart Association in this effort, please visit www.yourethecure.org and send your legislators an email letting them know that this issue is important to you.
