DE Advocate Spotlight: Becky and Brian

by Jonathan K. on Thursday, July 11, 2013

Becky's son, Brian, went into sudden cardiac arrest on May 2, 2010, at the age of 15. He had no prior health issues and was seen by his pediatrician only 2 weeks earlier for allergies. Brian simply walked to a friend’s house for a family picnic, stated "I can't see very well," and fell to the floor.

As one of his friends ran to get Brian’s dad, a party-goer immediately started CPR until EMTs arrived. All in all, Brian received 93 minutes of CPR-- about the time it takes to watch a movie.

Thanks to the actions of the bystander who performed CPR and began the chain of survival, Brian is now 18 years old and looking forward to college this fall. Becky is certain that without immediate CPR their family would have a different story to tell, which is why she's eager to advocate and share that story with Delaware lawmakers when a bill requiring CPR for high school graduation is introduced in the coming months.
