I'm Thankful

by Cresha A. on Monday, November 19, 2012

I am thankful for so many things.  Last week, we held an Advocacy Day to begin the process of bringing pulse oximetry screening to all Ohio newborns.  This simple, non-invasive test can help detect congenital heart defects in babies before the leave the hospital.  And, it is inexpensive.

At the event, advocates from across the state came to Columbus to speak to their legislators about this issue.  Some had stories.  Others passion.  All inspired!

While I love being able to work on policies that will make Ohio healthier and will save lives, I am most thankful for the opportunity to meet and work with our amazing advocates from across the state.  Your voices and support make the difference.  We couldn't do it without you!

I am also thankful for my wonderful colleagues.  Chuck Hamsher, the Government Relations Director in West Virginia, worked with a passionate group of mom-advocates.  They successfully passed pulse oximetry screenings last spring.  On Tuesday, not only did Chuck join us, but he brought Ruth Caruthers, one of the mom-advocates.  Both were able to share their experience and lessons learned, but also inspired our Ohio advocates.  Their presence made such a difference, as we start the effort here.  I am so thankful for both of them for sharing their time and passion!

So, in this Thanksgiving week, I'm reminded how special Ohio is.  While we may not be the first in every health policy, we have advocates who are dedicated and won't give up.

Happy Thanksgiving!
