Ohio You're the Cure Advocates Gather at the Statehouse in Support of Newborn Pulse Ox Bill

by Michelle Z. on Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Did you know that some babies born with a heart defect can appear healthy at first and are sent home with their families before a problem is detected? Pulse oximetry is a simple, inexpensive painless bedside test that can help detect a critical congenital heart defect (CCHD) before a baby is released from the hospital. On Tuesday, November 13th a group of advocates gathered at the Ohio Statehouse to meet with lawmakers to urge their support in adding pulse oximetry testing to the Ohio newborn screening panel. Advocates spent the day meeting with nearly 30 legislators and received positive feedback. Special thanks to West Virginia advocate Ruth Caruthers for joining us to share her story with advocates and lawmakers!  Be sure to make your voice heard on newborn pulse oximetry testing!
