Mary Beth Miller's Legacy Lives On

by Molly S. on Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Our two-year fight to screen all Alabama newborns for heart defects has resulted in a victory!  As of June 21, 2013 every baby born in one of the state’s birthing facilities will receive pulse oximetry screening to detect heart defects.

Thank you to all You're the Cure advocates and parents of children born with congenital heart defects who fought hard for this success.  Our only regret is that Mary Beth Miller, whose personal battle with heart disease spurred much of the activity around this critical issue in Alabama, was unable to witness the outcome.  Mary Beth passed away in March 2013, but her legacy will live on.  The American Heart Association is indebted to the Miller family for investing their time and passion into advocating this worthwhile cause.

We look forward to the many lives this new screening will save right here in Alabama.
