Birmingham Celebrates Smokefree Anniversary

by Molly S. on Tuesday, July 2, 2013

On June 22 the American Heart Association celebrated Birmingham's one-year smokefree anniversary at its local heart walk with between 6,000 and 7,000 walkers.  Councilor Valerie Abbott and Council Administrator Cheryl Kidd attended on behalf of the Mayor and entire City Council to accept an award presented by the American Heart Association for their dedication to making Birmingham a healthier place to live, work and play.

Having an ordinance cover all workplaces, including bars, restaurants and private clubs, is a public health victory for the City of Birmingham and the state of Alabama.  Secondhand smoke is a leading cause of heart disease and stroke.  Now we have a steady growth of scientific data showing that strong smokefree laws help reduce heart attacks.

We are very proud of the City of Birmingham leading the state in the fight for smokefree air. Congrats to Mayor Bell and the Birmingham City Council for fighting heart disease in the city!
