Augusta Residents Rally for Smoke-Free Air

by Krystle R. on Friday, August 2, 2013

On Tuesday, July 30 Augusta, Georgia entertainers and community members joined the BreathEasy Augusta coalition at the local Applebee’s to rally in support of a smoke-free Augusta.

Georgia still allows smoking in places where patrons have to be 18 and over to enter, exposing employees and entertainers alike to the many adverse effects of secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke causes 46,000 heart disease deaths and 3,400 lung cancer deaths in the nation. Plus, studies indicate that exposure to secondhand smoke increases a person’s risk for developing heart disease by 25-30 percent.

Despite these health risks, some folks argue for no change, scared that the smoke-free laws will negatively affect businesses. However, a recent comprehensive study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that smoke-free laws do not have a significant economic impact on restaurants and bars.

According to American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown, “there is simply no excuse for elected officials not to act. It is time for all states to pass comprehensive smoke-free laws to protect workers and the public from secondhand smoke.”

Augusta, let’s do our part! Help BreathEasy Augusta create smoke-free public places. Find out more at BreathEasyAugusta.org.
