Alabama Launches New Stroke Initiative

by Molly S. on Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Stroke is the No. 4 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in Alabama. When it comes to stroke, time lost is brain lost. That's why we're excited that the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Office of Emergency Medical Services activated the Southeast Regional Pilot Acute Stroke System to help ensure that stroke patients receive rapid and quality care everytime.

The stroke system pilot went into effect on August 26, 2013 and serves 18 counties. “Providing access to rapid stroke treatment within the first few hours of the onset of symptoms is vitally important in ensuring good patient outcomes,” said Dr. Donald Williamson, state health officer. “We applaud our partners for working to establish a system that will dramatically improve the quality of care stroke patients can receive by saving precious time and delivering expert neurologic care.”

The American Heart Association has advocated stroke systems for over seven years in Alabama. The activation of this pilot is a significant milestone. We look forward to continue our push for evidenced-based practices to treat stroke patients in our state. Ultimately, we hope to see these efforts extend statewide to provide all Alabamians with access to rapid and appropriate stroke care.
