Alabama Works to Improve Access to Healthy Foods

by Molly S. on Tuesday, October 1, 2013

We’re in the very beginning stages of our Healthy Food work in Alabama, but want to take a quick moment and provide you with education on food deserts. A food desert is a community with little or no access to healthy foods that make up the full range of a healthy diet.  Residents in these areas, which include many urban and rural parts of our state, lack supermarkets in their neighborhoods - forcing these families to rely on unhealthy fast food and snacks.

We can address this issue in Alabama by reducing economic barriers, provide healthy choices, and most importantly, educate local consumers about the benefits of healthy eating.  In Alabama, the American Heart Association is laying the ground work to launch a policy campaign around alleviating barriers through an effort called healthy food financing, which provides grocers, farmers markets and other food retailers with financial incentives to locate in food deserts.

We still have a long way to go to pave the way for this work and will provide additional opportunities for education to our volunteers on this very important topic.
