Protecting the Hearts of Newborns in Mississippi!

by Elizabeth W. on Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Congenital malformations are one of the leading causes of infant death in the United States, and critical congenital cardiac defects are responsible for more deaths than any other type of malformation.  Routine pulse oximetry screening is the best way to detect critical congenital heart disease in newborns before hospital discharge.

However, it currently is not included in the panel of screenings required by the State Department of Health for all newborns.  The goal is to add it to the list.  Please contact us at gsa.advocacy@heart.org if you’re a survivor or caregiver who is interested in this issue.  We need advocates to help put a face on the issue, in an effort to protect the hearts of newborns.
