Legislators Are Sworn In

by Kacie K. on Thursday, January 10, 2013

On Wednesday January 9th, the General Assembly convened the 2013-2014 Legislative Session with the swearing in ceremony for all the lawmakers.  On hand to witness the event was our new Governor.  This is a truly historic day for the state with the Republican party taking control of the Executive Branch and having a veto-proof majority in both legislative chambers.  As a part of yesterday’s session, lawmakers elected their leadership with Senate president pro tem Phil Berger and House Speaker Thom Tillis re-elected unanimously by acclamation.  Senator Louis Pate (R-Wayne) was chosen as deputy president pro tem and Rep. Paul “Skip” Stam (R-Wake) was selected as House speaker pro tem.    In other business the Senate passed its permanent rules for the session while the House passed temporary ones.

This one day session was intended as an organizational session, and the legislature will not reconvene in full until January 30th for the regular session.  In the interim lawmakers will get settled into their new offices and committees will get organized.  The House and Senate have announced their committee appointments and you can find all that information on the NC General Assembly website:  http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/homePage.pl.  Some highlights of the appointments that are of particular interest to You’re the Cure:

House Committee Appointments
Appropriations Senior Chair: Rep. Nelson Dollar (R-Wake)
Appropriations on Health and Human Services Chairs: Reps. Avila (R-Wake), Brisson (D-Bladen), and Hollo (R-Alexander)
Health and Human Services Chairs: Reps. Hollo (R-Alexander) and Jones (R-Rockingham)

Senate Committee Appointments
Appropriations/Base Budget Chairs: Sens. Brown (R-Onslow), Brunstetter (R-Forsyth), and Hunt (R-Wake)
Appropriations on Health and Human Services Chairs: Sens. Pate (R-Wayne) and Hise (R-Madison)
Health Care Chairs: Sens. Hise (R-Madison) and Pate (R-Wayne)

Before you know it, regular session will be upon us.  Your actions are very important and make a big difference in building healthier lives.  Our lawmakers need to hear from you.

So tell us – what will you do in 2013 to make a difference with You’re the Cure?
