Kick-off Heart Month with a Letter to your Lawmakers!

by Kacie K. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013

We will kick off the beginning of American Heart Month, this Friday, February 1, 2013 with our National Wear Red Day.  Heart Month and Wear Red Day are ways that we here at the American Heart Association can work with you, our volunteers, to spread the word about the impact of heart disease.

The start of the North Carolina Legislative Session begins only days before National Wear Red Day.  One way that you can help celebrate Wear Red Day and help spread our message is to write a welcome letter to your lawmakers.  In this, you can introduce yourself and explain why cardiovascular disease and stroke issues are important to you.  Below are a couple of simple points that you could share with your lawmaker today.

- Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women age 20 and over, killing approximately one woman every minute.
- Eighty percent of cardiac events in women could be prevented if women made the right choices for their hearts involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.
- Over 81 million American adults have one or more cardiovascular diseases.
- About 47% of American adults have cholesterol levels that are too high.
- More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next four causes of death combined, including cancer.
