NIH Funding Saves Lives

by Keltcie D. on Tuesday, November 27, 2012

North Carolina You’re the Cure advocate, Juddson Rupp recently had a letter to the editor published in the Charlotte Observer, “Don’t let NIH research fall off the fiscal cliff; it saves lives.” Read more here: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/11/19/3670514/observer-forum-letters-to-the.html#storylink=cpy

Unless Congress takes action before January 2, 2013, support for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be automatically cut by $2.5 billion. Research is a critical investment in America’s health. In 2011, North Carolina received $1.063 billion in NIH funding. In addition to funding important research, this funding provided 20,571 jobs across our state.

Juddson is the Vice-Chair of the NC AHA Advocacy Coordinating Committee and a cardiac arrest survivor.  As an advocate, Judd uses the power of his voice to let his lawmakers know that NIH funding saves lives.  The American Heart Association urges you to take action and let your member of Congress that you want them to protect the NIH from sequestration (automatic cuts). Visit www.researchsaveslives.org to send your letter.

Heart disease and stroke were once virtual death sentences. But since 1940, research has reduced death rates from heart disease by more than 60 percent and from stroke by 70 percent. Despite this improvement, heart disease remains the No. 1 killer in our country and stroke is the No. 4 cause of death. We can only continue this amazing progress if Congress makes the NIH a national priority and protects it from the “sequester.”
