Apache Mall Rochester Go Red!

by Anne S. on Monday, February 4, 2013

On Saturday February 2nd, the American Heart Association held a Go Red for Women event at the Apache Mall in Rochester, MN featuring a survivor fashion show, fitness demonstrations and a healthy cooking demo. We were also joined by Sen. Carla Nelson and Rep. Kim Norton from the Rochester area who have both been champions for Heart Healthy Policy in the MN Legislature. Rep. Norton addressed the crowd and spoke about her involvement on the Childhood Obesity Working Group and the importance of expanding the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) to once again be statewide. Sen. Nelson told the audience about her bill to close the tax loophole on “little cigars” and how important it is to increase the tax on all tobacco products in MN.

Survivor Amanda Jean Beaulieu helped us talk to attendees about American Heart Association Policy initiatives like Pulse Ox screening for newborns to detect Critical Congenital Heart Defects and a MN Safe Routes to Schools program. We collected messages from mall goers to their state legislators and helped introduce our new friends to Rep. Norton and Sen. Nelson. What a great event! Go Red & Go Rochester!
