Lashonda Kennedy Iowa

I was introduced to the American Heart Association by one of my friends, Terri, who is the Vice President of Government Relations for the Southwest Affiliate. I am so grateful to Terri for introducing me to both the American Heart Association and the world of Advocacy.  It has changed my life in ways that I cannot properly explain.  Over the years I have been involved in dozens of non-profit organizations, but the American Heart Association stands out to me as the most nurturing volunteer environment of any organization.

I started volunteering for the American Heart Association with the Southwest Affiliate in Denver Colorado in 2011.  I have always been drawn to organizations that focus on empowering women and as a Grassroots Action Chair for the American Heart Association, it was a perfect opportunity to not only advocate for a community, but to make changes in the lives of those being served.  In 2012, through routine meetings with lawmakers, our team was able to help pass Senate Bill 68, which will eliminate trans-fats in all Colorado Schools stating in September, 2013.

I am originally from coastal North Carolina.  I received my undergraduate degree in Communications, and a Master’s degree in Education from Wake Forest University. Although I have recently moved to Iowa City, I am so excited I’ve had a chance to plug into the Eastern Iowa community right away. Currently, I am serving on the Fostering Strength Spring Fundraiser Committee for the Junior League of Cedar Rapids and am looking forward to working with the Go Red for Women Campaign in Iowa City.

When I am not volunteering for the Junior League or the American Heart Association, I am traveling with my husband Bobby. We are big time foodies so we enjoy traveling, and eating fabulous food accompanied by great wine.
