November 10 is Smoke Free South Dakota Day

by Pamela M. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013

Communities across the state of South Dakota proclaimed November 10th as Smoke Free South Dakota Day in recognition of the three year anniversary of our statewide smoke free law.  Our smoke free law is a contributing factor in a 14% reduction in heart disease hospitalizations from 2009-2011, and for a significant drop in heart attacks and chronic disease obstructive pulmonary disease hospitalizations.  These reductions have led to a cost savings of nearly $5.5 million for South Dakota.

In Sioux Falls, AHA advocates were on hand for the reading and acceptance of the Smoke Free South Dakota Day proclamation read by Mayor Mike Huether at the November 5th City Council meeting.

Each year, the state of South Dakota spends $274 million on health care costs for tobacco-related illnesses.  These health and economic costs are shared by every South Dakotan, regardless of whether or not they smoke.

In November 2010, the voters of South Dakota overwhelmingly approved our statewide smoke-free law by a 64-36 percent margin.  We strongly encourage state and local leaders to continue to support policies that encourage healthy living in South Dakota.
