Celebrating One Year Anniversary of Smoke Free Air

by Pamela M. on Friday, November 8, 2013

North Dakotans are celebrating the one year anniversary of passage of their smoke-free law.  On November 6, 2012, all 53 counties in the state of North Dakota voted in support of a 100% smoke-free law.   The smoke-free ballot initiative was supported by two-thirds (67%) of the voting public to protect North Dakotans from secondhand smoke.    North Dakota became the 30th smoke-free state.

The smoke-free law went into effect on December 6, 2012 protected more workers, residents and visors from secondhand smoke exposure in public places and places of employment.

The law includes enclosed areas of public places and places of employment including restaurants, bars, truck stops, guest rooms an common areas within hotels and motels, health care facilities, long-term care centers, assisted living centers, licensed adult day care facilities, retail tobacco stores, workplace vehicles, charitable gambling and places of public access that may be leased for private functions.  Also included is outdoor spaces within twenty (20) feet of entrances, exits, operable windows, air intakes and ventilation systems of an establishment in which smoking is prohibited by the law.

Thank you to our You’re the Cure Advocates for their work to get out the vote and promote the importance of smoke-free workplaces and public places to protect everyone’s right to breathe clean air.
