You're The Cure Advocates of the Year Recognized

by Anne S. on Friday, July 11, 2014

Last month we were very excited to recognize two outstanding You’re the Cure advocates for their work this year for the last several years during the American Heart Association volunteer event in Minneapolis. Read more about the winners below:

Advocate of the Year: Dr. John Wheeler

Congratulations to Dr. John Wheeler for his passion and dedication as a lifelong advocate for the American Heart Association in several areas. Whether practicing medicine as a cardiologist, sharing his story as a survivor or being a top level policy advocate, he is dedicated to helping us saving lives. Dr. Wheeler has always been comfortable advocating AHA policy priorities to lawmakers at the Minnesota State Capitol and in Washington, D.C., from research funding to Childhood Obesity policy, from smoke free campaigns all the way to emergency care issues, he is one of our most trusted and relied upon partners and advisors in Minnesota. As he steps down from the Minnesota’s State Advocacy Committee after serving on it for more than a decade, we want to honor his service and all he has helped us accomplish.

Advocate of the Year: Jodi Gertkin

Congratulations to Jodi Gertken, from BLEND at CentraCare Health Foundation for her outstanding leadership to make Minnesota a healthier place for our children. Jodi did an outstanding job representing active transportation at the Capitol this year by testifying at numerous committees, facilitating local media and meetings with legislators about Safe Routes to School, and appeared on the Fox 9 News morning program with her daughter to highlight the benefits of walking and biking to school on National Walking Day.
