F as in Fat 2012 – Where does Illinois Rank?

by Anne S. on Thursday, October 11, 2012

With all the discussion on the federal, state and local level about obesity, I wanted to share the recently published F as in Fat Report 2012, by the Trust for America’s Health.  Check it out to find out where Illinois ranks on the obesity scale, and then think about what YOU can do to encourage healthier living among your family and friends.

As the report analysis shows we could prevent obesity-related diseases and dramatically reduce health care costs if the entire state reduced our average body mass index of all Illinoisans by just 5 percent by 2030. For a six-foot-tall person weighing 200 pounds, a 5 percent reduction in BMI would be the equivalent of losing roughly 10 pounds.  We can do this!

Also, make sure you take a moment and thank Governor Quinn for supporting policies to combat childhood obesity by establishing a PE Task Force in Illinois.  This Task Force may play an important role in defining our children’s physical education opportunities for years to come. Send a message thanking Governor Quinn for his support in establishing a PE Task Force.
