Justin Bell, AHA Government Relations Director, Honored with Award from Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivor Community!

by Anne S. on Monday, October 29, 2012

October 24-26th, the annual Survive and Thrive Conference was held in St. Cloud, MN. At the reception, Justin Bell was honored with the first annual Survive and Thrive Impact Award for his victory in passing the CPR in schools legislation in Minnesota. AHA volunteer and Parent Heart Watch leader, Norm Okerstrom was also honored at the event for his efforts.

The primary focus of the event is on the survivors, caregivers, families, and those who were lost to Sudden Cardiac Arrest and their families. Between 300 and 350 thousand people die of SCA every year in the United States. Yet, it is rare that an event focus on awareness of SCA and the actions we can take to increase the odds of survival and enable the survivors to thrive. Accordingly, the program included academic presentations for Medical, Art, Music, Writing, Theater, Film, and workshops in Medical Humanities, CPR, and EMS.

Justin also presented at the conference highlighting how to bring survivor stories into the public policy process to influence lawmakers.

Justin, congratulations on this wonderful achievement!
