Six Southwest MN Counties Pack a Punch for Improving Health!

by Anne S. on Monday, December 3, 2012

Nov. 29th the focus was on health in Lincoln, Lyon, Pipestone, Murray, Rock and Nobles Counties. Over 80 attendees at the Marshall community health forum heard from Miss Minnesota, Siri Freeh (pictured), Bill Burleson from Minnesota Department of Health, and local speakers trumpeting the success of the Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) in the community. Lunch was provided by local farmers and prepared by the local chef of the Daily Grind in Marshall. The evening event in Luverne had over 60 attendees and included repeat performances by Miss Minnesota, Siri Freeh, and Bill Burleson. Local food was provided for dinner and prepared by Blue Mound Meeting Center. Michael Vander Haar (pictured at the Luverne event), the director of Active Living Pipestone, explained how the SHIP funds make it possible to create partnerships and leverage other resources in the community to provide more opportunities for activity and healthy eating. As a result, Pipestone has become a leader in promoting active living in their community through improvements in safe walking/biking, complete streets, and community gardening.
