A Special Invitation: Advancing our Mission through Advocacy

by Pria A. on Monday, June 10, 2013

The Texas Legislature wrapped up its 83rd regular session last week, and we saw numerous victories for heart disease and stroke prevention. Those successes are possible through grassroots volunteers engaging in the legislative process and being a champion for change. Stay tuned for a full Session Wrap-Up but today we wanted to provide a special invitation.

We strongly believe in furthering our mission through public advocacy and you are invited to join us for a Town Hall on that subject.

On Wednesday, June 12 the American Heart Association and other advocacy groups will hold a presentation and discussion on the role of Advocacy within non-profits. This Town Hall will focus on maximizing community involvement through mission related advocacy. Among the panelists will be our National CEO Nancy Brown along with other non-profit leaders.

The event will take place in Austin from 8:30am to 11am with an optional program extending into the afternoon. A full invitation is below with more details and RSVP information. We would love to see our volunteers in attendance!

Please join us on Wednesday, June 12th at The Austin Club for a presentation and panel discussion of Independent Sector's study Beyond the Cause: The Art and Science of Advocacy. We will be joined by Diana Aviv, President and CEO of Independent Sector, Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association and Heather McKissick, CEO of Leadership Austin.

Public policy advocacy remains an underutilized tool in the public sector to achieve mission goals. A recent Independent Sector study, Beyond the Cause: The Art and Science of Advocacy, identifies five essential approaches to successful advocacy and analyzes the effectiveness of advocacy on issues facing the entire nonprofit and philanthropic sector.

Hear from nonprofit advocates and experts including the lead author of Beyond the Cause, Independent Sector President and CEO Diana Aviv about how they analyze the ways in which the non-profit and philanthropic sector can increase its influence on public policy.

The discussion will include the case studies featured in the report and explore ways in which you can further your mission through effective advocacy, with an opportunity to lend your voice to a candid discussion with the panelists and reflect on the results.

To register for this event, please email Shay.Kennedy@heart.org by June 5th. Held at the Austin Club (110 E 9th St Austin, TX 78701), registration and breakfast will kick things off at 8:30am. The program will begin at 9:15am and will end at 11:00am. Optional tours of the Texas State Capitol followed by legislative visits will take place at 11:15am.
