An Update on Smokefree Idaho

by Grace H. on Tuesday, July 9, 2013

Guest Blogger: Adrean Cavener, Government Relations Director

I have been working on smokefree issues every year since I started with the American Heart Association, six years ago.  But I have never been more excited about our progress than I am right now.  Smokefree Idaho has had a significant amount of growth this last fiscal year, and I wanted to share some successes with you.

First, following our success in Boise, Ketchum was the second city in Idaho to pass a comprehensive smokefree ordinance!  Ketchum’s ordinance includes all indoor places and also includes e-cigarettes.  We at the American Heart Association applaud the work of the City Council and also all the city staff who were pivotal in passing such an important ordinance for the health of Ketchum.

We have also been working hard in other parts of the state for smokefree victories.  In Garden City, we conducted an air quality test that shows that workers in Garden City are exposed to extremely high levels of dangerous secondhand smoke.  In Pocatello, we have 16 endorsements from businesses and organizations including over a hundred petition signatures supporting smoke-free workplaces.  In Idaho Falls, we have also seen a wave of grassroots support, with over 1,000 people signing petitions voicing their support for Smokefree Idaho.

Smokefree Idaho is continuing our work to make sure everyone has the right to breathe clean air.   If you would like to know more about Smokefree Idaho or would like to find out how to get involved, visit us at www.smokefreeidaho.org, or follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SmokefreeIdaho
