Update on House Bill 601

by Joshua B. on Thursday, December 5, 2013

The Montana Department of Health has released recommendations on Critical Congenital Heart Defect (CCHD) screening for newborns, stating that “All birthing hospitals in Montana should screen newborns for critical congenital heart disease with a pulse oximetry test prior to discharge”.  House Bill 601 was introduced in the 2013 legislative session and aimed to do just that.  It received a hearing, but was not approved by committee and failed to pass.  With these recommendations by the Department of Health we can now move forward with regulations that would enact a requirement and potentially save the lives of newborns in Montana who suffer from previously undetected CCHDs.  As a You’re the Cure advocate, we need your help.  Please let your voice be heard during the rule making process.  Look for an “action alert” from us when the time is right to speak up and lend your support of this important life-saving measure.  Thank you!
