Advocate Story: Tamika Moore
My name is Tamika Moore, and I want to share my story in hopes that it will inspire others to prioritize their health before it’s too late.
I am a mother of two and work in the healthcare industry. However, despite being in a field that focuses on wellness, I found myself neglecting my own health, a decision that had serious consequences. I am a stroke survivor, and I suffer from congestive heart failure. A few years ago, I underwent heart surgery, during which stents were placed in my chest.
My health issues didn’t just affect me physically—they uprooted my life. I lost my home and became homeless for several months, unable to provide for my sons. It was one of the darkest periods of my life, and what haunts me the most is knowing that much of it could have been prevented.
The turning point came when I was rushed to the hospital, thinking I had a cold or was suffering from an allergic reaction. Breathing had become difficult, but I had no idea that fluid was building up around my heart and lungs. The doctors admitted me immediately, and I began a long, difficult journey toward recovery.
Had I listened to my body sooner—paid attention to the warning signs and prioritized my health—my life might have looked very different today. But instead, I was forced to learn the hard way. Over the past few years, I’ve made my health a top priority, and it has transformed my life. I’ve lost 85 pounds, gained more energy, and become more active, all because I finally realized how important it is to take care of myself.
I urge women, especially those in my age group, to love yourselves enough to prioritize your health. Stay up to date with screenings, and never hesitate to seek a second opinion. As women, we juggle so many responsibilities, but remember this: your health is your wealth. Without it, everything else in your life suffers.
I speak from experience, and I hope my story will encourage others to avoid the hardships I faced. That’s why I’ll be walking in support of the American Heart Association at the Heart Walk with my family. Thank you for listening, and I hope this message reaches someone who needs to hear it today.
