Texas Youth Learn about the Legislative Process

by Mark F. on Thursday, November 8, 2012

No matter the age, you can learn how to make a difference in your community. In Austin, Texas, the students at a local charter school did just that. About 20-25 students, who collaborated with the American Heart Association, attended the Youth Advocacy Day, which included an Advocacy training and a detailed demonstration of how the Texas legislature works. Students were also briefed on AHA priorities and how the organization fights for heart healthy and stroke smart policies in the Lone Star State.

The students heard from a staff member from State Representative Eddie Rodriguez’s (D-Austin) office, who has been a champion of increasing access to locally grown fruits and vegetables and took a tour of the Texas Capitol. At the very end of the tour, they actually met Representative Rodriguez on the Capitol steps.

“This is such a great experience for our students,” said Kristen Silra who is a Social Studies teacher at the school.

“This training really opened their eyes to the fact that they have a voice,” said teacher Aleah Penn.

After a day about the importance of civil education, the students winded down with physical exercise on the lawn of the capital.
