Advocate Spotlight: Dana, Paul and Sam, Pennsylvania

Dana, Paul and Sam Pennsylvania

When I was pregnant with each of our boys, my husband and I did not know their gender.  We wanted to be surprised.  We didn't care if we had boys or girls, "as long as they're healthy."  We said it dozens of times, never imagining something would be wrong with one of our children.  We took it for granted.

Our second son, Sam, was born with life-threatening heart defects requiring two open heart surgeries by the time he was four months old.  Thankfully, today he is an energetic 3 year old, ready to go to school and play soccer like his older brother.  We are thankful for all the AHA does to fund heart defect research.  Our son would not be here today without all the AHA has done to help doctors and medical professionals continue their work developing new surgical techniques.
