Lawmakers Debate Menu Labeling

by Julie H. on Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Talk about an issue that we didn't expect to fight this legislative session - menu labeling preemption. That's when the state government restricts local governments from having restaurants include nutritional information in their menus. Several legislative committees already have voted in favor of menu labeling preemption. Right now, actions are being taken to bring this issue up on the House and Senate floor.

Considering Mississippi ranks #1 in the nation for obesity rates, you'd think lawmakers would support helping residents make informed choices when eating out. After all, more folks are eating out now a days and many underestimate the amount of calories they are consuming.

We understand that reducing and preventing obesity is going to take a multi-faceted approach, including federal, state and local support. But we think menu labeling plays an important role and local communities should have the option to use it.

Tell your lawmakers that you don't support limiting the ability of your local government to attend to the needs of its citizens.
