If you eat out, this affects you!

by Julie H. on Monday, February 18, 2013

When you dine out, do you like to know how many calories are in an appetizer or entree? Some restaurants already provide this information on their menus or menu boards; this is called menu labeling. For many folks, the nutritional facts provided by menu labeling help them make healthier choices.

Unfortunately, lawmakers in the House and Senate voted on February 13th in favor of menu labeing preemption. Essentially, they do NOT want local governments to have the option to use menu labeling. The issue passed the House with a vote of 83-31 and the Senate 51-1. Granted, the House and Senate voted on different bills pertaining to the same issue, so there is a small difference in the two bills. If neither house accepts the other version, the bills will be sent to a conference committee, who must come to an agreement on the final version. If this happens, we will have a little more time to educate our lawmakers on this issue.

Stay tuned for You're the Cure alerts! We're counting on your help to educate lawmakers on this issue.
