AHA Celebrates Two Georgia Wins!

by Krystle N. on Monday, April 1, 2013

The Georgia legislative session wrapped up its work late in the night on March 28th. Thank you to You’re the Cure advocates who helped make this a banner year for advocacy!

The first win happened earlier this session, when our CPR in Schools bill – Senate Bill 212 sponsored by Senator Jeff Mullis – passed the House 140-21 and headed to the Governor’s desk awaiting his signature before becoming law. The CPR in Schools bill ensures that all students learn CPR before graduating from high school. Due to a recent story about two young boys who stepped in to help a woman perform CPR on her baby, we’ve had some great media interest in our CPR in Schools bill –

The second win happened in the final hours of session, when the Senate unanimously passed our Shared Use bill – House Bill 382 by Representative Jay Powell. As a result of this legislation, schools will not be held liable if they choose to open up their facilities after hours.  This will provide open facilities in communities to encourage families to get active. The bill now waits the Governor’s signature.

Again, thank you to all of our Georgia You’re the Cure advocates who’ve helped us achieve these successes.
