We're About to Cross the Finish Line for Pulse Ox!

by Julie H. on Monday, June 10, 2013

Congenital heart defects are the No. 1 killer of infants with birth defects. That’s why we’re thrilled the Alabama Board of Health recently adopted a regulation to add Critical Congenital Heart Defect (CCHD) to the mandatory panel of newborns screenings for the state.

Effective June 21, 2013, every Alabama baby born in one of the state’s fifty-two birthing facilities will receive a pulse oximetry screening. Luckily for Alabama babies, hospitals statewide had exceptional buy-in from the beginning and voluntarily implemented the screening prior to the mandate.

Although this two-year campaign was wrought with waiting and anticipation, it enjoyed overwhelming support from American Heart Association advocates and parents of children born with congenital heart defects.

Our only regret is that Mary Beth Miller, whose personal battle with heart disease which spurred much of the activity around this critical issue in Alabama, was not here to witness the victory. Mary Beth passed away in March 2013, but her legacy lives on. The American Heart Association is indebted to the Miller family for putting their time and passion into advocating this worthwhile cause.
