Birmingham Residents, Workers Celebrate One Year of Smokefree Air

by Julie H. on Tuesday, June 11, 2013

Can you believe it’s been a year since the Birmingham City Council passed a smokefree ordinance protecting its workers, residents and visitors from secondhand smoke?

Smoking is a leading contributor to cardiovascular diseases and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 4 killers in Birmingham, the state of Alabama and across the country.  Each year, over 800 non-smokers die in Alabama as a result of secondhand smoke.  However, mounting scientific evidence shows that smokefree workplace laws are an effective tool in the fight against heart disease and stroke.

By passing this ordinance last year, the city of Birmingham leads the way on smokefree policies across Alabama and has created a fine example for our state legislature to follow.

If you’re in the Birmingham area, you can celebrate this anniversary with us at our June 22nd Heart Walk at Uptown Entertainment District. We hope to see you there!
