New State Law Protects Newborns' Hearts

by Julie H. on Monday, July 8, 2013

Thanks to You're the Cure advocates, the American Heart Association is celebrating a huge success from the 2013 legislative session.  On June 21 Governor Jindal signed a bill into law that ensures all babies in Louisiana will be screened for congenital heart defects using pulse oximetry.

Congenital heart defects are the number one killer of infants with birth defects.  These defects range in severity from simple holes or murmurs to severe malformations, such as the complete absence of one or more chambers or valves.  Some critical congenital heart defects can cause severe and life-threatening symptoms, which require intervention within the first days of life.

Pulse oximetry is the most effective way to detect heart defects in newborns.  The bill goes into effect on August 15, 2013.
