Tennessee Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week

by Denise C. on Thursday, August 1, 2013

Governor Halsam declared August 1-7 as World Breastfeeding Week in the state of Tennessee.

We applaud the Governor for his recognition of the important health benefits of breastfeeding for infants, toddlers and their mothers.  We additionally thank the Governor for utilizing the Tennessee Department of Health to help educate new and expectant mothers about the importance of breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding has an immediate impact upon the health of a child, as well as long-term positive effects.  Some of these positive effects include stronger cardiovascular health, avoiding type 2 diabetes and a reduced risk of chronic disease.  Breastfeeding is a “win-win” for mothers and children alike!

In 2011, the American Heart Association and the Tennessee Obesity Taskforce successfully advocated for Senate Bill 83/House Bill 871, which authorizes mothers to publicly breastfeed a child regardless of the age of the child without being prosecuted for public indecency or indecent exposure.  This legislation, as well as the recent actions by Governor Haslam, illustrate the ways in which Tennessee is moving to improve the health of mothers and children through breastfeeding.
