Meet Our New Mississippi Advocacy Chair

by Elizabeth W. on Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Kerry Caldarelli will serve as the 2013-14 Chair for the American Heart Association’s Mississippi Advocacy Committee.  Her passion for the American Heart Association is quite easy to explain because it is her eleven year-old son, Garrett.

Garrett was born with Shone’s Complex, which involves multiple defects to the heart.  He has undergone numerous procedures to save his life, including two open heart surgeries that have left him pacemaker dependent.  The advancements that have saved Garrett’s life have direct links to the American Heart Association’s research conducted at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

In previous years, Kerry has served as the Heart Walk Team Leader for her office in Gulfport, and most recently she has served on the state advocacy committee.  She and Garrett continue to advocate on behalf of the American Heart Association, even traveling to Washington, D.C. to speak with Members of Congress.  Kerry and Garrett are also active members of the Mississippi Gulf Coast chapter of Mended Little Hearts, a group of hope and support to children, families and caregivers impacted by congenital heart defects.

We look forward to Kerry’s leadership for the year ahead that promises to be challenging, yet exciting.
