Georgia, We're Moving in the Right Direction!

by Krystle N. on Tuesday, October 1, 2013

Great news! Georgia has seen some improvement in obesity according to F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future 2013, a report from the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Georgia has moved from being the 17th to the 20th most obese state in the nation.  The report states that, “after three decades of increases, adult obesity rates have remained level in most states in the past year.  However, rates are still high—Georgia’s adult obesity rate is 29.1 percent and 13 states have adult obesity rates above 30 percent, 41 states have rates of at least 25 percent, and every state is above 20 percent.”

So, we’re moving in the right direction!  In recent years, we’ve worked together to ensure students receive quality physical education and to encourage schools to open up their recreational facilities to organizations such as the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Club.

But we cannot slow down.  We can – and should – do more. Stay tuned to You’re the Cure alerts and Your Advocacy Pulse: Georgia Beats for ways you can help make a positive difference in our state.
