Tennessee Attorney General Supports E-Cigarette Regulation

by Denise C. on Wednesday, October 2, 2013

Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper has bravely petitioned the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) to place increased restrictions on e-cigarettes, their advertising, and ingredients.  He is partnering with Attorneys General from 39 other states in this effort since they are seeing this trend become increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional tobacco products.

Key highlights from the letter include:

  • Asking the FDA to take a stance of firm action by regulating e-cigarettes as “tobacco products.”  This can be done by including e-cigarettes under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009.
  • Raising concerns about the way in which e-cigarette manufacturers market their products to our kids.  They noted the usage of enticing flavors such as fruit or candy and even cartoon characters.  Additionally, without regulation e-cigarettes and refills of liquid nicotine solution can be easily purchased over the internet without age-restrictions.

Nicotine is a highly hazardous product that is extremely addictive and can even be deadly.  The U.S. Surgeon General has even expressed concern that regardless of dosage nicotine can adversely affect how the brain functions.  Without regulation these dangerous chemicals risk putting our children in danger!

The American Heart Association applauds this effort by the Tennessee Attorney General Bob Cooper for acting in a bi-partisan manner with other Attorneys General to positively impact the lives of all Americans by making this  important stand against this evolving source of concern.
