Advocacy and CPR Demos at Heart Walks

by Elizabeth W. on Thursday, November 7, 2013

Advocacy plays a BIG role in our American Heart Association Heart Walks throughout the year.  Our walkers really enjoy seeing our 'Annie' CPR mannequins on display so they can touch and learn in an unintimidated environment.  Children and adults alike are able to experience first-hand how easy and quick it is to learn Hands-Only CPR.  At the Metro Jackson Heart Walk on November 2, we had over 100 people engage in Hands Only CPR instruction given by representatives from St. Dominics Hospital and Laerdal.  We certainly think it is one of the most important stops to make and try out during the event, since performing CPR is not a normal opportunity in everyday life.  We really emphasize that learning CPR is a life-saving skill that EVERYONE should want to learn, in order to create the next generation of life-savers.

During the Heart Walk we have local volunteers walk around the event to ask walkers if they would like to support our state legislative issue for the year by signing a petition card with his or her name and email address.  Our volunteers do a great job of helping us reach a great amount of people in a short amount of time with our important, advocacy messages.  After the event, the American Heart Association staff sends in our signed petition cards to our national center to compile the information and reach out to those people that signed up and showed interest the day of the Heart Walk.  We believe this is a smart way to engage walkers that might not know much about our state advocacy efforts.  We really enjoy introducing Mississippians to this aspect of the American Heart Association, that most are not aware of.

Please take 5 minutes and tell several friends about our advocate network, You're the Cure, that reaches across Mississippi, as well as, across the nation.  Encourage them to visit to sign-up and get started in letting their voice be heard amongst our Mississippi legislators.  We believe that every voice and action matter to make a healthier Mississippi!
