Access to Healthy Food

by Elizabeth W. on Thursday, November 7, 2013

The Florida advocacy staff continues to connect with many different groups, organizations and elected officials to discuss opportunities to address the issue of Food Desert areas across Florida.  Recently, the Florida Department of Agriculture’s gave a demonstration of its new mapping program that will be used to help identify areas of need in our state.  The program, when finished, will overlay USDA census data, show free clinic usage, list areas of diabetes' death, grocery store locations and more.

As we continue to move forward on this issue, we will be looking for opportunities within the legislature to provide funding to address Food Desserts.  These funds would help create new grocery stores in communities with little or no access to fresh, healthy foods.  Childhood obesity is not an easy fix, we need to continue to creating opportunities for exercise and access to healthier foods, not just in our schools but also in our communities.  Please stay involved in this issue by signing up for our 'You’re the Cure' network at and become part of the solution.  If you have any questions, please contact David Francis at
