Gulf Coast Advocacy Training Luncheon

by Elizabeth W. on Friday, January 3, 2014

The American Heart Association held an advocacy training luncheon in Gulfport, Mississippi on December 10, 2013 at the Knight Nonprofit Center.  Staff invited volunteers, educators and business leaders from across the Gulf Coast of Mississippi.  With approximately 25 people in attendance for the training luncheon, Katherine Bryant, Mississippi's Government Relations Director, led the training for the group.  Katherine reviewed the legislative issues that will be presented on behalf of the American Heart Association in the 2014 Legislative Session beginning this week at the Capitol.

A highlight of the training was the opportunity to hear from two volunteer advocates.  Kerry Caldarelli of Long Beach, Chairman of the Mississippi Advocacy Committee and mother of a young heart survivor, shared her experience as an advocate for the American Heart Association at a You’re the Cure Lobby Day in Washington, D.C.  Monica Whittle of Vancleave also shared her personal story of using CPR to save her husband’s life.

Trainees watched the 30 Years of Building Healthier Lives through Advocacy video to be introduced and educated with the long history and purpose of our volunteer advocacy network, You're the Cure.  Elizabeth Williams, Health Strategies Assistant, elaborated on the importance of spreading the 'ask to join' to family, friends and co-workers and how easy it is to join You're the Cure.  A short video was viewed on the simplicity of joining You're the Cure and what to expect once an individual is signed up.  Watch it here!  The trainees were given action items to recruit friends and family and also asked to help spread awareness through social media sites.

This was the first training of its kind on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and was well received!!  We were thrilled with the opportunity to share the important work being done by You’re the Cure advocates across the state.

This was the second advocacy training held in the state with the prior training luncheon being held in Jackson in May 2013.
