Florida Coalition Grows

by Julie H. on Tuesday, September 18, 2012

The American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association want to ensure that all Florida newborns are screened for Critical Congenital Heart Defects (CCHD).  A simple, non-invasive, quick test called pulse oximetry will go a long way to help diagnosing cases of CCHD in newborns.  Presently, CCHD affects 8 of every 1,000 babies born in the U.S.  Unfortunately, present screening methods only pick up approximately 50% of the prenatal and neonatal CCHD cases.  Adding pulse oximetry screening will significantly increase the number of children who are detected as CCHD patients and can be acted upon quickly.

As we work on this issue, it's important we bring key players to the table.  That's why we're excited our pulse oximetry coalition is growing again as we add more and more parent-based groups to our team.  We're also in communication with professional organizations who have joined us as well, such as the Florida Pediatrics Society and the Florida American College of Cardiologists.  We look forward to growing our supporters on this issue.
