My Story: Roy Erlewine

by Pamela M. on Monday, December 9, 2013

Roy Erlewine lived the typical American lifestyle. He worked a high stress job in sales that found him in the car and on the road most days. Although he enjoyed running and swimming he often found himself winded because he was a smoker since the young age of 15. He often ate on the road which meant a diet high in trans-fats, salt and sugar and not enough fruits or vegetables. Having lost a brother to a deadly heart attack in his 50’s, Roy knew the signs and symptoms of a heart attack.

It was a day like any other; Roy was on the highway for work and feeling a bit more tired than usual. He started experiencing cold sweats, shortness of breath, shooting pain down left arm and pressure on his chest. He knew he needed to seek medical attention immediately. As it turns out, Roy was experiencing a massive heart attack and ended up having a quintuple bypass surgery to repair many blocked arteries.

Because of the American Heart Association’s awareness and education regarding the signs and symptoms of a heart attack, Roy is able to live a different, healthier life. He quit smoking, lost 30 pounds and now runs 5k’s with his granddaughters, whom he almost didn’t have the chance to meet. He also volunteers for the American Heart Association as a way of giving back to the organization that saved his life.
