Governor Dayton allocates $2 million for Safe Routes to School initiative

by Anne S. on Thursday, January 30, 2014

Governor Dayton included $2 million in his $986 million bonding package for Safe Routes to Schools (SRTS). Thank you to all the advocates who took action and urged the governor to include funding in his bonding package for this very important program!

We are appreciative to Governor Dayton for providing first-ever state infrastructure funding for SRTS. While our request is $6 million we are thrilled to see that the governor elevated this in his list of priorities for 2014. The governor has shown his commitment to kids and communities by including $2 million for SRTS in his budget.

Being included in Governor Dayton’s bonding package is an important strategic step for our campaign this year.  The Minnesota Legislature will convene on Feb. 25th to begin compiling their version of a bonding proposal. Please watch for other upcoming opportunities to take action advocating for SRTS funding this session.   We also invite you to join us for our Heart on the Hill Lobby Day where we will be meeting with lawmakers about funding Safe Routes to School on April 2 at the capitol.  Register for this free event here.

Special thanks to Dr. David Tilstra, President of CentraCare Clinic, for penning a letter to the editor that was published in the St. Cloud Times. The timing couldn't have been more perfect!
