AHA and MN Department of Health presents at St. Kates

by Anne S. on Friday, October 26, 2012

St. Kate’s College in St. Paul MN offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health. On October 24th The American Heart Association and the MN Department of Health were asked to guest lecture to the entire program. We were asked to explain the roles we play in the field of public health and offer an example of how we work together to each achieve our goals. Government Relations Director – Justin Bell- gave an overview of what the American Heart Association does and how advocacy plays a significant role, we dissected our recent CPR in Schools campaign and looked ahead to Pulse Ox Screening for newborns in MN. The enthusiastic audience lined up to become  You’re the Cure Advocates and write messages to their legislators supporting Pulse Ox Screening. (pictured)

MDH Epidemiologist – Jim Peacock- followed with a presentation on what Epi’s do within the Department of Health. We ended the evening by talking about the development of the MN Acute Stroke System of Care and AHA & MDH have partnered to move a once stalled process forward. It was a fun and informative evening!
